  An Interlude

As the Doctor sat in his office waiting for Trainer to arrive, he couldn't help but reflect on what he'd accomplished over the past twenty years. He'd had a dream. Certainly a dream that many would never understand, but nonetheless it had been his dream. He remembered how he had wondered years ago, if it would even be possible to arrange so many diverse variables into a cohesive operation that would actually work. He remembered how he'd tried to initially explain it to his old friend, Kit, and WORDS had simply failed him. However, IN time he'd been able to share his dream and discovered the exhilaration of finding a true kindred spirit.

Of course, since then, he'd discovered that there were many people who agreed with his vision. He'd travelled widely, even visiting many of the CAPITALS of the world, and everywhere he went, he had found others who understood and shared the ideas he had developed over his life. It was gratifying now to see how his vision had grown and evolved into the enterprise he now headed.

His thoughts were briefly disturbed as his assistant entered the room to check if he should

CONNECT the coffee maker to prepare coffee for the meeting. The Doctor felt a twinge of irritation at being interrupted for such an idiotic reason. He'd thought his assistant more capable than that. TO be disturbed for such an insignificant reason was inexcusable. If he'd had a client in his office it would have been embarrassing.

"Just send Trainer in as soon as he arrives," the Doctor growled, "and don't ever come in here again to ask about something you should be able to handle on your own."

The assistant was glad he saw Trainer coming into his office and immediately ushered him into the Doctor's office, wanting to make a hasty retreat.

"Good morning," Trainer smilingly said as he entered. "I brought the FORM you'll need to sign for that new equipment you wanted to order. I thought I'd get that done as quickly as we could.

"I appreciate your initiative," the Doctor responded, still glaring at the retreating assistant wondering if he got the MESSAGE.

Trainer continued smiling as he noticed the Doctor's somewhat aggravated demeanor as he watched his assistant scurry out of the office. "How's the new boy working out," he quipped as the Doctor vented his aggravation.

"Let's just say his education is CONTINUING, and that there are PARTS I'll be taking a firmer hand in during his next training session," the Doctor grimly responded.

But then the mood quickly shifted as the two men got down to the business before them.

"I've been considering what we might have to do if it became necessary to abandon or close down this site. The simple truth is that it is always the smallest or most insignificant detail that is overlooked that can cause the biggest problem. That's always the case when you basically choose to hide in plain sight as we have done here. We count on our anonymity in this area, and that will probably be enough, but I think it's time we developed a backup plan, or more specifically, a backup site in case we have to move quickly. Additionally, the fact is that we're in need OF more room. I've actually thought about adding another STORY onto this building in any case."

"Well you ARE right about the need for more space, and the idea of having a fall back location that can be quickly utilized is a good one, though it may also be a very expensive one," Trainer responded.

"It will undoubtedly be expensive, but if it were to become necessary the expense would seem minimal by comparison with full exposure of our activities. I'd much rather have them trying to figure out what was going on here based on the artifacts and remnants of our operation that they would find. The thought of actually BEING here while authorities were raiding the place is too awful to contemplate."

"You're right about that. I guess I've mostly BLOCKED that out of my consciousness. Otherwise it would be hard to focus on the tasks at hand," said Trainer.

"Exactly so!" the Doctor quipped, "and frankly I want to keep it that way. That's why I want to make preparations now. So it can remain at the back of our minds while we're about our work. BECAUSE our work is what's important."

"Well are you thinking of another site here in Houston, or are you thinking about another city?"

"That's been one OF my major considerations in all of this. To be sure there are some advantages to staying in Houston, and moving an operation like this would present significant technical and tactical difficulties if we had to go far. Additionally, the unique nature and CONTENT of what we'd be moving adds its own problems.

I keep going back to the idea of 'hiding in plain sight,'" the Doctor continued. "Did I ever tell you about the secret code Kit and I worked out when we were kids. I don't know if we were just paranoid or just being kids, or both, but we developed a way of texting and emailing each other secret messages. We would put the words of our secret message in all caps, right in the middle of whatever we were writing. It didn't really make any sense unless you read all the capitalized words in the order in which they appeared. Then a separate message would appear. It was a way we could 'hide it in plain sight.'

I don't have any idea why that seemed relevant to me right now," the Doctor laughed, "but it did. I guess what I'M TRYING to say is that that would need TO be the model for where ever we go. Though I think it's easier to FIND a location where we can do that in A large metropolitan area like Houston, I'm not convinced our back up should be here. I think we have to assume if our cover is blown here, it will follow that some of the resources we have in place now helping us might be in jeopardy as well. No, I think we have to relocate to a NEW place, a different VENUE, so to speak.

The problem THAT arises is finding an appropriate location in a city large enough to be anonymous, while not being too difficult to move to. Moving the stock WILL be difficult, but I'm convinced that there has to be a way to do it."

Trainer had listened to everything the Doctor had said, and it made sense. However, he too knew the logistics could prove daunting. He decided that what he would need to do was work on some very specific calculations on the number of captives, number and size of crates required, support equipment needed to transport, in short, all the details needed for a successful transfer. He hoped he could work all that out then PUBLISH a report for the Doctor to review.

"I want you to start working on THE logistics for such a transfer," the Doctor said to Trainer, "While I continue to look at various cities that might prove acceptable for our purpose. I still like the idea of being on the Gulf coast because of sea access.
I've been thinking we might find something in Louisiana or Mississippi that might work. Both places have enough corrupt officials that blind eyes could be turned if needed."

"Yeah," Trainer responded, "I kind of thought that might be the STORY there. I'll be anxious to hear what you find out."

"I spoke with Watts yesterday," the Doctor continued, moving on to another subject. "AS I suspected his last run through some of the city housing projects proved to be very interesting. He said I'd have a WRITTEN report in a day or two, but he did share something about a couple of the boys he saw."

Trainer waited patiently, as he knew this was always one of the Doctor's favorite parts of their meetings. Discussing some of the prospects that might prove eligible for a "grab."

"Yeah," the Doctor continued, "I'M particularly interested in one he mentioned. From Watt's description it sounds like the guy might be of Italian extraction. Watts said the guy was very nice looking with dark features. I'd been hoping for someone like that because of a particular buyer that told me he'd been SEEKING someone with those features. I think it's always great if we can have a prospective buyer out there even before we make the grab. That way we can have the buyer take a look once we have the merchandise, and he's able to make any SUGGESTIONS that he might have about the training. The product is individualized for the customer, so to speak," the Doctor chuckled.

"I've noticed that we've had pretty good luck in some of those city projects before," Trainer added. For our purposes, it's one of the few times where you're FROM isn't held as a possible detriment," Trainer added as the two men continued laughing.

"No the fact is that we've pulled some really good looking merchandise out of those projects. They tend to already have pretty good musculature, and once we can get them on OUR diet around here, they fill out really well," the Doctor continued.

"Which reminds me," the Doctor said, while he began to pat the surface of his paper strewn desk. "Damn, I can never find those READERS when I need them," he uttered in frustration.

"Ummpphh," Trainer chortled good humouredly, while he tapped the top of his head. The Doctor looked up at Trainer, then reached on top of his own head and pulled his reading glasses down onto the bridge of his nose.

"Like I was saying, I have the changes listed here for the diets of our stock for NEXT week," the Doctor said as he reviewed a piece of paper before handing it over to Trainer. "I want to increase the supplements to FOUR times a day during that period. I think we'll see a difference with that."

Trainer took the paper and set it down next to him. He'd be sure to enter all the information into the BOOKS before the day was out, but it wasn't really crucial for their conversation right now. He could tell by the Doctor's distracted appearance that there was something else of greater importance on the Doctor's mind.

"I'm wondering where we ARE in relation to taking Holt?" the Doctor finally said. "Are we about READY with the new space? And how about the plans for that particular grab?"

"Actually, I think it's all coming along very well," Trainer replied. "I know this one will be different, but I've made CONTACT with a good prospect to be the Boss on that particular job. He's going to get back to ME in the next couple of days, and I'll set up a meeting. I already know he's not happy where he's AT right now, some place called, GETMY115FIX."

"What the Hell does that mean," the Doctor asked.

"Who knows anymore," Trainer responded. "The names of the little businesses that pop up one day and are gone the next, don't seem to need to mean anything. It has something to do with a lot of HOTMAIL, and that makes even less sense to me. In short, this guy will jump at what we're offering."

WITH that covered the Doctor mentioned a few other IDEAS that might be helpful to Trainer when he talked with the guy.

"I'M particularly interested in this red head that Watts has found," the Doctor continued. "So much SO, that I've made some preliminary contacts with a couple of buyers. They seemed really GLAD to hear from me with the prospect. I think that's going to translate in to some big buck when the time comes. I know it's a lot of work, but I' hope YOU'RE getting ready for him.

"Don't worry about a thing," Trainer quickly responded, "I know this one is also important to you, and frankly I've been ENJOYING making some of the plans. But what's THE STORY with Buyer Y. Does he still want the modifications made to 104?"

"Yes, as a matter of fact, it sounds like he's going to go further than I'd originally planned. I CAN'T decide if he's a little crazy or not, but since he's willing to pay whatever it costs, I really don't care. WAIT till you see his latest requests he's added TO his list."

I'll SHARE them with you at our next meeting," the Doctor said, "but I want to wrap things up here pretty soon so I can have lunch with 115. I want to begin preparing him for a few TWISTS that are coming his way IN the near FUTURE," he laughed. "And I don't think he's going to enjoy the lunch nearly as much as I am," the Doctor continued. "In fact, I can almost guarantee that PARTS of it will be most unpleasant for him," he finished as he continued to chuckle.

WITH that the Doctor began to show Trainer out of his office. "I know I'll see YOU later this afternoon, and we'll go over anything else we need to then. Let's stay focused right now because we've go a lot going on."

"We'll get it done," replied Trainer as he left the Doctor's office. He had a very busy day ahead of him.
